The history of our vineyards dates back to 1885 when grower José Ramón Gayoso began to plant Godello on the high, slate slopes of the Sil valley, convinced by the potential of the variety even though his contemporaries though him mad.
The Godello plantings at Portela, his birthplace, grew over the years but in the end the land was finally sold. It is thanks to this visionary man that the authentic strain of Godello was preserved, allowing us to make rigorous clonal selection today.
Years later the Prada family bought back these vineyards, the oldest of which is Pedrouzos, and there are now 11 small parcels of old Godello which have lent their name to one of our best-known wines – Pezas de Portela. The vineyard holding is made up of a mosaic of small parcels of old vines situated in some of the finest locations in Valdeorrras, notably the sunny slopes at Córgomo and Portela. These are priviledged sites where the altitude and latitude allow for optimum ripening.
The unique microclimate of Valdeorras, characterized by wide temperature variations between day and night, and the diverse range of soils, are both reflected in the personality of the wines, which are concentrated and well-structured with a marked mineral quality.

Valdesil relies on a number of local growers, many of whom have supplied the winery since its foundation.
The vineyard work is overseen by our own technical staff throughout the year, ensuring that the quality parameters set are achieved.

There is continual assessment in the vineyards, particularly at budding, flowering, ripening and vintage time when visits are more numerous. Regular contact with the growers throughout Valdeorras allows us to choose the finest grapes and thereby maintain consistency from year to year.
