The mosaic of small parcels or ‘pezas’ of old vines which form our holding is divided between Córgomo and Portela, areas traditionally associated with the finest vineyards. The distinctive feature of these locations is their southerly orientation and the special soil types, being for the most part decomposed slate.
Portela
faces south-east, at a height of 550 metres, on the right bank of the river Sil, in the municipality of Vilamartín. The soils are chiefly fractured slate with a sandy texture which favour good drainage and low yields. They also store the heat which helps the grapes ripen. The resulting wines are subtle, with a marked mineral character and high alcohol content.
The Portela vineyards include: ‘Os Chaos’; ‘Pedrouzos’; ‘As Lamelas’; ‘O Real’; ‘Camino Arcos’; ‘As Chas’; ‘Devesiña’; ‘A Coba’; ‘O Lombo’; ‘Valdecarballo’
Córgomo:
is the site closest to the winery, planted mainly with Mencía grapes. In one of the highest vinegrowing zones, its soils are poorer than those on the banks of the river Sil. Yields are low but ripening is good and the grapes have great concentration of sugars. The vineyards of the Finca Asadoira are some of the largest and may be found adjacent to the winery. |
