Besides being a wine educator for years and an aspiring artist in Smithfield, this old wine lover enjoys one other avocation each year at this time. For more than 25 years, I’ve joined many other happy souls in portraying Santa at a variety of Christmas events. I talk to many children and adults and very often someone will ask, “What does Santa do on Christmas?” So here goes! This is what one Santa enjoys on Christmas.
First of all, Santa likes a good bottle of wine and loves to cook. So it seems natural that Christmas Eve and Christmas Day would be the perfect time to relax with Ms. Claus in the kitchen. On Christmas Eve this Santa visits the children in his neighborhood and then hurries home to a warm fire and a special Christmas Eve dinner prepared by Ms. Claus.
Santa’s favorite meal starts with a glass or two of cold Virginia Sparkling wine. It’s the 2004 Brut Blanc de Blanc from the Kluge winery in Albemarle County.
Soft but elegant, this is a perfect way to start the evening.
Next comes a wonderful shrimp cocktail accompanied by one of Santa’s favorite white wines, the Spanish 2006 Val de Sil made from the Godello varietal, which he finds at the local Bon Vivant wine shop. It is dry and crisp on the palate with a subtle unoaked finish that marries with the rich shrimpdish.
Then it’s lobster with a special citrus sauce created by Ms. Claus which we enjoy with another of Santa’s favorites, the 2006 L’Ecole No 41 Columbia Valley Semillon. This is a luscious white wine with crisp acidity and hints of melon and pear on the finish. Ms. Claus adds a touch of green with a well-buttered spinach soufflé.
Santa’s traditional dessert on Christmas Eve is a sumptuous chocolate éclair from the Fresh Market and a glass of the 2008 Special Late Harvest Gewurztraminer from the Robertson winery in South Africa. It has a lovely honeysuckle and rose petal bouquet.
After a long winter’s sleep, it’s Christmas day and time to plan for a Christmas dinner. It will begin with a warm bowl of mushroom bisque accompanied by a glass of the 2008 Pine Ridge chenin blanc-viognier from Oakville California. It has pear and melon flavors with a bright acidity and sells for less than $10 at Total Wine.
The entrée will be a slow roasted standing rib roast which has been coated with mustard, chopped thyme and pepper and married with several glasses of the 2006 Graffigna grand reserve malbec from San Juan, Argentina. It has a wonderful aromatic nose with hints of plum, chocolate and oak. You can find this lovely wine at the Bon Vivant wine shop. It wouldn’t be Christmas dinner without some hot Yorkshire pudding together with creamy baked leeks with garlic, thyme and parmigiano cheese.
For dessert, Ms. Claus will be whipping up a succulent chocolate soufflé topped with fresh raspberries which will be served with a glass of the Kluge Estate Cru. This is a very interesting white wine that can be served as an aperitif or paired with a variety of desserts. It is 100 percent Virginia chardonnay that has been fortified with Virginia-distilled brandy and then aged in Jack Daniels barrels for six months. You can find this unusual wine at the Bon Vivant wine shop for around $20.
Santa doesn’t eat like this every night but it’s Christmas! We wish you a happy holiday and a joyous new year.
